Team RideSmart
Wins!
A couple of the CMRA's young guns led the way
after the start of the four hour endurance race
at the Motorsport Ranch, however, when all was
said and done, it was the veterans who led the
way at the finish.
Zac Chapman and Derek Wagnon put on quite a show
during the first hour of round six of the Shogun
Endurance Series at Cresson, Texas, putting
their respective teams, Team Fastlane and Moto-Ace
Racing, at the top of the leader board.
However, Team Ridesmart's Ty Howard knew that
the only time that being up front really counted
was when the checker flag came out.
Team Ridesmart (Ty Howard, Dirk Anderson, Larry
Myers, Justin Sonnen and Devyn Anderson) took
control of the race during the third hour of
competition and then steadily pulled away to
claim their first overall win of the series with
a one-lap margin of victory over Desert-Rats.net.
The "Rats", in turn, topped Lone Star Track Days
by a full lap, while Moto-Ace Racing and Team
Fastlane rounded out the top five.
"I originally wasn't going to race the
endurance, but when I got here I decided to get
some time in to get ready for the six-hour race
later in the year," said Howard. "Larry started
real well and had us up near the front and then
I got on and just put together a good pace. |

"It actually took three starts to get the
endurance race under way at Motorsport Ranch.
The first start was red flagged after a bike in
the first wave threw a chain which broke the
center case and dumped oil on the track, sending
several riders in the second wave to the tarmac.
Start two was red flagged when a pair of riders
collided in the first corner, just after the
start. The race finally got underway for good on
the third try with Michael Sanchez of Short Bus
Racing grabbing the holeshot. However, by the
fifth lap of the race it was Chapman with the
lead with Wagnon knocking at his door. Wagnon
and Chapman waged a fierce battle at the front
of the 30-team field, each rider taking a turn
at the lead, until the one-hour mark when both
riders came into pit. During the second hour,
things got even more interesting when John Haner
threw away the Short Bus Racing YZF-R6 in
Ricochet, putting an end to their attempted run
to the front. The Sum of all Parts-sponsored
bike was loaded into Larry's crash truck in four
pieces after the incident. Meanwhile, Lone Star
Track Days and Desert-Rats.net were beginning to
make a charge toward the front and during the
final hour the two teams moved into second and
third, respectively, behind Team Ridesmart,
dropping Team Fastlane and Moto-Ace Racing to
third and fourth. Then, with the laps winding
down, the Desert-Rats.net team was able to pass
Lone Star Track Days to claim the runner up
position. |

Apparently, everybody had two really fast guys
and a slower guy and we had three really consistent riders, said
Troy Green of Desert-Rats.net. "That paid off by putting us on the
box, and that is all that matters."
Gabe McClendon of Lone Star Track Days credited consistent lap times
for their third overall finish. "Some of the up-and-coming kids
punked us down at the start, but we had a good solid and consistent
ride and ended up third and second in class," said McClendon. "Ty
Howard is kind of an AMA ringer and he rode an extra stint, so that
was a big difference." Moto-AceRacing claimed their best finish of
the season with their fourth overall finish, while Team Fastlane
dropped to fifth with tire problems, after leading the first part of
the race, however, they still took the top spot in the C Superbike
division. "After Larry came in he said the tire was feeling really
slick," said Zac Chapman of Team Fastlane. "By the time he had done
about 20 minutes the cord was showing on the rear tire and we had to
do a tire change, which really hurt us." GMAN Racing finished
sixth overall and took the win in the Formula 1 division, further
extending their lead in the standings over Kitchen Pass Racing, who
finished second in class at MSR with a 10th overall finish. Faltless
Racing took the win in the Formula 2 class with a ninth
overall. |
